Grading Policy

Curious About Grading?

Grading art is not about what the teacher likes or whether it's 'good'!!! Artwork should demonstrate specific techniques, use of design elements, communication of meaning, and innovation. Check out the General Rubric for Assessment of Visual Art! Project grades are based on this rubric, with the addition of specific assignment requirements.

When Is It 'Good'?

  • What does it mean to be a NOVICE at something?
  • What does it mean when you are EMERGING in something new for you?
  • What do you have to know and be able to do when you are ACCOMPLISHED at something?
  • Do you ever say, WOW! when something is really well done?
  • When something shows that its maker 'really gets it' and goes 'above and beyond' in some way, it's an Art 100.

Artwork, Labs, and Most Assignments

Artwork, labs, and most assignments are assessed on a level of proficiency in technique, design, meaning, and innovation using a rubric, rather than assigned a point value. Students are provided the specific requirements for meeting at least an accomplished level of proficiency prior to each project assisnments.

Sketchbooks, and Some Other Assignments

Sketchbooks, and some other assignments are scored similarly based on completion, development, and quality.

Writing

Writing is scored using a simple rubric indicating proficiency at answering the question asked and the degree to which the response is developed.
