GENERAL INFORMATION

A scientific calculator is sufficient for Algebra 1 & Geometry.  Calculators are beneficial for completing many homework assignments and they could be useful for some tests.  A few of the features we will often use include:  pi, square root, and exponents.  Next year, in geometry, you will learn how to use sin, cos, and tan on the calculator.  The cost ranges from about $10 to $18 for a good scientific calculator.  If you watch back-to-school ads, you may get a deal for less than $10.

NOTE:  Arrangements can be made to borrow a scientific calculator during class, but there is a limited number.  Borrowed calculators cannot be taken home for homework assignments,  although they can be used in the classroom before/after school and during lunch.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Some suggested models for scientific calculators :

TI-30Xa

TI-30x IIS

TI-36x

Casio fx-250HC
Casio fx-260

Sharp EL-531VB

â€¦or if you prefer a graphing calculator—purchase a TI-83 plus or TI-84 plus.  Graphing calculators are used frequently by those students that are moving on to Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Precalculus, etc.

The above models are most commonly used in classes at PVHS, but they are only recommendations.
Other models are acceptable.  Either type of calculator (graphing or scientific) would be a great investment!!
