Course Description: This course if for the student with no prior Japanese language experience. We will focus on language acquisition and proficiency development through the five C's (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities) of National Foreign Language Standards through reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing in the target language.

 

Students will be able to:

  • Read and write hiragana, katakana and 25 kanji.
  • Express basic conversation in Japanese, such as greetings, classroom, family, every day, hobbies, emotions/ feelings, etc.
  • Relate language learning to the Foreign Language Culture Triangle (Products, Practices and Perspectives).

School subjects, classroom items, classroom expressions, Japanese school life, polite requests

Family

 

In group/out group norms, family terms, nationality, geography, occupations

Introduction to Japanese foods, meals, customs, talking about the past and the future

Spring Semester

Unit 5

Hobbies and Japanese Culture

Hobbies, sports, activities, likes and dislikes, colors and traditional/modern culture

Characteristics

 

Describing people, body parts, clothing, habits etc.

Unit 7

Free time

 

Making plans, telling time, transportation, activities,

Yesterday

 

Talking about the past, keeping a diary, describing location, animals, counters, seasons, health
